NEC Display Solutions aids mammographers with update to its grayscale product range

Middle East, 3 May 2011 – Specially designed for radiological mammography diagnosis, NEC Display Solutions is adding the MD215MG, a five-megapixel 21.3-inch grayscale model, to its successful MD range. The MD215MG was showcased for the first time in Europe at ECR 2011 in Vienna.

With a resolution of 2.048 x 2.560 pixels and a pixel pitch value of less than 0.165 millimetres, even minute, impalpable tissue formations can be displayed. This enables the LCD screen to meet the requirements for medical diagnosis monitors used to reproduce mammography images.

With its high-end 10-Bit grayscale In-Plane-Switching (IPS) LCD panel, the NEC MD215MG screen is capable of reproducing up to 1.024 shades of gray from a palette of 3.826. Similarly, the contrast ratio of 850:1 and a peak brightness of 1.100 cd/m² ensure the MD215MG enjoy outstanding image quality. NEC’s innovative Front Sensor System ensures that the MD215MG is capable of long lasting luminance accuracy and straightforward DICOM compliance. This high level of image quality is particularly important when looking for signs of micro-calcifications that can be an indicator of a precancerous condition.

All displays of the NEC MD range are DICOM pre-calibrated at the factory. This calibration, along with NEC’s calibration software suite that accompanies all of NEC’s MD screens, ensure compliance with the stringent visual requirements in digital diagnostic imaging, including conformance with DIN V 6868-57 and PAS1054 standards and the AAPM-TG18 guidelines.

Typical mammography detectors have a spatial resolution of 50 microns, which translates to an image with a resolution of 2.500 x 2.000 pixels. This maps perfectly to the MD215MG’s native resolution, which means no zooming or panning of the original image is required, thereby improving diagnostic efficiency.

“There were approximately 332.000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the European Union in 2008*, meaning that globally the highest incidences of this disease occur in Western Europe,” said Christopher Parker, Product Line Manager Professional Displays at NEC Display Solutions Europe. “This highlights how mammography is a life critical application, and the more detail seen by the doctor, the better the diagnostic accuracy. It is with this impetus in mind that has led us to develop the MD215MG.”

The new NEC MD215MG ships in factory pairs for best possible monitor matching, and will be available from its network of medically accredited outlets in May 2011. NEC Display Solutions provides a standard three-year guarantee for its MD range, which can be optionally extended up to five years.
