Kuwait; 24 June 2015: On 23 May 2015, the Ministry of Communications (MOC) in Kuwait proceeded with the migration of 34,000 units on MOC GPON network in several key districts of the city. This migration was seamlessly performed overnight and upgrade of MoC network was done from NGN to IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS). IMS has established itself as a framework for a common infrastructure that supports enhanced communications services by integrating multimedia service bundles for premium content and entertainment services.

This recent upgrade aligns Kuwait with the global trends in communication evolution and ensures the provision of new upgraded voice, video and data services. With this new system in place, one network can now provide different and upgraded services to the subscribers.

A spokesman at Kuwait’s MOC, said: “This is part of the Ministry’s strategic plan to upgrade and improve the subscribers’ services to meet with the vast evolution of the telecom technologies. The migration process was so well managed by the MOC Fiber optics/core team along with Alcatel-Lucent, without affecting the current subscribers’ services and with minimal network interruptions.”

Pierre Chaume, Vice President of Alcatel-Lucent in Middle East & North Africa (MENA), said, “This migration is an important milestone in our cooperation with the MOC and reflects our expertise in the working with our customers to ensure a smooth transition to the latest technologies, keeping in line with global trends. The operators in the MENA region are forward thinking in their adoption of new technologies and we are pleased to see the smooth transition between two of our key solutions.”

The Kuwaiti MOC was the first customer worldwide to deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solutions in 2005/2006, with the completion of the project towards the end of 2009 and opted for Alcatel-Lucent’s IMS solution.
