Street Nights BboyCo-founders DJ Lobito Brigante, Alexandre Teodoresco, and Sherif Abaza have announced the return of the B-boy dance competition during its upcoming “Street Nights” festival, the street-culture event that features local musicians, artists and food outlets. The B-boy (the original term to describe what became known commercially as “break-dancer”) competition will test various skills and feature a 3 vs 3 crew battle as well as a 7 to smoke toprock (footwork) competition. Winners will get a total cash prize of AED 5000 for first place and AED 1000 for second place.

DJ Lobito, one of the co-founders of Streetnights, said, “We are excited to welcome competitors who have registered from all over the GCC to participate in this event like they have done in our previous events. Several of the participants plan to drive across borders just to make it to the competition.”

The term Bboy or B-boy dates back to the origins of the dance in the early 70s and comes from “break boy”, where the slang “break” was a street term to describe when someone has reached their “breaking point”.

DJ Lobito, was the first to bring international b-boy events to the Middle East and expose the scene and the regional community to major event organisers worldwide by organising events such as Mighty 4 (2010), Battle of the Year (2011) and Freestyle Session (2013). He continued to bring a more community grassroots approach through StreetNights, when he brought b-boy legend and pioneer, Ken Swift (named by Time magazine as one of the most influential dancers of the 20th century), to the first event hosted in Al Quoz.

This year’s event will feature special performances by Lobito (ambassador for Zulu Nation), Zajazza (Pioneer DJ Champion), The Recipe (hip hop super crew), and Amazon Cumbia Sound, among others.
