Middle East, 1 May 2012: The Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) has released the official short list of retailer nominations for its 2012 awards, which take place in conjunction with DISTREE Middle East. A total of 26 retailers have received nominations across ten country categories, with seven retailers nominated in multiple categories. Each nominated company has earned ‘MERA 2012 Recommended Retailer’ status for the next 12 months. An overall winner in each country will be determined by a live electronic vendor vote at the ‘MERA: 2012 Awards’ Gala Dinner on May 16th.

The nominations are based on feedback gathered from ICT and consumer electronics (CE) vendors operating in the region. Vendors have completed MERA Monthly Monitor Report (MMR) feedback forms each month selecting their preferred retailer by country based on a combination of factors including pricing, marketing, sales, POS activities, promotions and business relations.

The leading retailers per country were determined based on the total number of mentions received from vendors in the MMR during the last 12 months. The top five retailers receive official nominations in countries with more diversity in terms of the number of companies operating. In markets where less retail chains operate, the top three retailers receive official nominations. A tie in the ranking system means that six retailers receive official nominations in UAE.

The official list of retailer nominations (in alphabetical order) per country is as follows:

UAE Retailer of the Year: Carrefour, Emax, Jacky’s, Jumbo, Lulu, Sharaf DG
Saudi Arabia Retailer of the Year: Carrefour, Extra, Jarir Bookstore, Obeikan, Panda

“We would like to congratulate each and every nominee on achieving ’MERA 2012 Recommended Retailer’ status and look forward to welcoming them to this year’s awards ceremony,” said Farouk Hemraj, CEO at DISTREE Events, the organisers of DISTREE Middle East.

“This is the fifth year we have hosted the MERA Awards. During that time we have witnessed incredible growth and development in the Middle East market and the emergence of a highly professional and structured retail channel,” he continued.

According to Hemraj, the ’MERA: 2012 Awards’ will once again provide an independent platform for senior retail, distributor and vendor executives involved in the region’s ICT & CE retail channel to reflect on the growth and development that has happened during the last 12 months.
